    Readings from Peter Cole

Readings from Peter Cole, Poet and Translator
The Dream of the Poem: Hebrew Poetry from Muslim and Christian Spain, 950- 149.

Peter Cole has published three collections of poetry, Rift (Station Hill), Hymns & Qualms (Sheep Meadow Press), and What Is Doubled: Poems 1981- 1989, recently published by Shearsman Books in the UK. He has worked intensively on Hebrew literature, with special emphasis on medieval Hebrew poetry. Cole's prize-winning translations of the Hebrew Golden Age poets have helped to recreate for contemporary American readers the multifaceted world of medieval Spain, in which Jewish artistic and intellectual communities flourished under Islamic rule. His new anthology, The Dream of the Poem, traces the arc of the entire period and reveals this remarkable poetic world in all of its richness, humor, grace, gravity, and wisdom. Cole has received numerous awards for his work, including fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the 1998 Modern Language Association Translation Award. Cole is also the founder and co-editor of Ibis Editions, a small press devoted to the publication of Levant-related literature.

    A Message From the Librarian
    Library

Welcome, or welcome back! (Does it already feel like you've been here forever?) If you need a break, a quiet space to study or a fun place to hang out, come to the library on CJL's second floor. We have recently cleared out some of the duplicates and older, tired volumes, leaving the shelves easier to navigate. And the light bulbs have all been replaced!

Books may be checked out for the semester, but please return them as soon as you are done. The sign-out sheet is in the corner on the left by the windows.
If there are books you would like to see added to our little library, please let me know. You can catch me in the office on Tuesdays and Thursdays or email me at elizag@princeton.edu.

    Thanks!
