Jews for Social Justice Dinner & Discussion

Join Jews for Social Justice (JSJ) for its second dinner-discussion this Tuesday, May 1st at 6:00 pm in the Small Dining Hall at CJL!

Senior Jonah Perlin will lead a discussion based on his thesis: ,"Trials Before Man, Justice Before God: The Role of Religious Ethics and the Prosecution and Punishment of War Criminals." >From Amalek to Adolph(s): A Discussion on the Jewish Ethics of Retribution and Revenge

The discussion will focus on the question of Jewish approaches to the world's worst criminals both as a question of Jewish ethics and of Jewish history. While there is a great deal of discussion of why evil exits, there has been a particular focus, in light of the recent execution of Saddam Hussein as well as the recent shooting at Virginia Tech, on what Judaism says about how we should respond to wanton acts of evil. By looking at Biblical and Talmudic sources, as well as several primary sources surrounding the choice to execute Nazi War criminal Adolph Eichmann by the State of Israel during the 1960's we will begin to attempt to answer a question that Jews have been asking for centuries -- in the case of the world's worst criminals must we take revenge as God commands, or is retribution and/or even forgiveness an option?

All welcome. For more information on JSJ, contact Stephanie Greenwood at sgreenwo@princeton.edu

Chew on This: Whose Your Daddy?

Wednesday, MAy 2nd at 12 noon in the Small Dining Room at the CJL. .

In 1983, the Reform movement adopted the position that a person could be Jewish if his or her father or father was Jewish. This put Reform Judaism at odds with the Orthodox and Conservative movements, which hold that a person is born a Jew only if his or her mother is Jewish. Come for an informative and engaging, yet gentle and sensitive, discussion of each of these stances and the reasoning behind them

All welcome.
