Challah and Other Chametz!

Shabbat is here and the challah is back! Join us for Shabbat dinner this Friday, April 13th at the CJL. Dinner starts at 7:30 p.m.

Reform and Conservative Kabbalat Shabbat services on Friday start at 6:30 p.m. Orthodox services begin at 6:45 p.m.

Amitav Ghosh Lecture

GenizaOn Monday, April 16, 2007 at 4:30 in 101 McCormick Hall, author Amitav Ghosh will be presenting the 29th Carolyn L. Drucker '80 Memorial Lecture, titled The Making of In an Antique Land: India, Egypt, and the Cairo Geniza.

The lecture relates to his book In an Antique Land, which tells the story of a twelfth-century Jewish India trader and his Indian slave, whose records were discovered among the letters and other documents of the famous Cairo Geniza.

Participants will include: Rabbi Mark Dratch: Member of the Clergy Task Force on Abuse of Jewish Women International; Ms. Courtney N. Esposito: Director of Education and Training at Womanspace, Inc. and Former Dir. of the Center for the Study of Violence, Albert Einstein Med. Center in Philadelphia.; Reverend Dr. Dorothea Custis: CEO of PLM Consultants (Precious Lamb Ministries), providing workshops and seminars focusing on issues of domestic violence and its impact in the Black Church; Imam Mohamed Magid:Imam and Executive Director of the All Dulles Area Muslim Society in Sterling, VA., Speaker for the Peaceful Families Project, an organization that provides speakers and training on issues relating to domestic violence in the Muslim community; Dr. Lakshmy Parameswaran: Founder and Board Member of Daya Inc., a Houston- based organization which promotes awareness of domestic violence in the South Asian Community.

Take Back the Night - Break the Silence!

Special Guest: Rose Steward, the only known survivor of a serial killer, was repeatedly raped, assaulted, and strangled. She was the key witness for in three separate trials that spanned almost a decade. Through the years, Rose has written articles for the Los Angeles Times and Redbook magazine, has appeared on national talk shows and her story has been featured in a Discovery Channel series on survivors called ''Lifeforce.'' She has presented widely including to inmates at the California Youth Authority, professional counselors at a victim sensitivity conference and Loyola Law School. Rose has spoken out about the importance of positive role models and of confronting stereotypes that make women vulnerable
