Arts/Culture

The Center for Jewish Life/Hillel at Princeton University believes that the arts provide a unique way for students to express themselves and their Jewish identity. To that end, the CJL fosters and supports several different artistic groups, and is always open to talking with students to create a new initiative. If you are interested in being more involved in the arts at the CJL, contact our staff at hillel@princeton.edu. See below for more information on the arts and CJL, and to learn more about great opportunities and resources the CJL knows about, check out our Resources page.

Klezmocrats

The Klezmocrats were founded in the fall of 2001 by Josh Burton, Joe Skloot, and David Spielberg. The Klezmocrats' focus is on playing genuine Klezmer music in the traditional style of those who arrived in America at the turn of the 20th century, while also incorporating creative and original ideas in interpretations of pieces. The Klezmocrats play ensemble performances and also have an abundance of dancing music appropriate for Jewish life-cycle occasions.  For more information, contact Madeleine Walsh at mwalsh@princeton.edu.

Koleinu

Koleinu ("Our Voice") is Princeton's co-ed Jewish a capella singing group. We sing a variety of Hebrew and English music, both religious and non-religious. We perform at the Center for Jewish Life and in other locations around campus, as well as for various functions off campus.  For more information on Koleinu, visit our website at http://www.princeton.edu/~koleinu/home.html.

Theater Grant

As the result of a generous gift from Karen and David Mandelbaum ’55 P’87 P’89 P’98 in honor of Jordan Roth ’87, the Center for Jewish Life/Hillel at Princeton University is proud to announce a fund designed exclusively to cultivate theatre projects dealing with Jewish issues.  The first recipient of support from this fund was PUP's production of "Parade" in the spring of 2006.  We will accept applications on a rolling basis.  The application should include a proposed budget and a brief explanation of how the play/production is related to Jewish themes, Judaism or Jewish life.  For more information, or to submit a proposal, please contact our staff at hillel@princeton.edu.
